The Health Information Management Department's mission is to provide high-quality, clear, career pathways for students interested in the career business program of health information management. Health Information Management supports Butte College's mission of preparing students to become productive members of a diverse, sustainable, and global society.
The Health Information Management Department (HIM) in the past has been part of the Business, Computer and Information Services (BCIS) Department. In Fall of 2021, the Department was transferred to the Family and Community Services (FCS) Department, where Allied Health and Emergency Medcial Services (EMS) is housed. While part of the he BCIS department, a new program, Medical Coding Certificate of Achievement was created. The Medical Coding Certificate of Achievement is closely aligned with American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) curriculum. While doing so, the new discipline of Health Information Management (HIM) was created. Current medical office classes were modified and the discipline changed to HIM and new courses were created. The Medical Coding Certificate of Achievement program is designed for students to be able to complete in two semesters. There are currently three part-time faculty teaching the HIM courses with the hope of a full-time instructor in the future.
Because this is a newly formed department within FCS, HIM has just begun to develop a plan for evaluation of SLO's. The HIM Department has developed a matrix for evaluation of student learning outcomes for 2021-2025. All HIM courses and their SLO's will be evaluated by 2025.
SLO's assessed in Fall of 2021 (and due to be reported out in Spring of 2022) are:
HIM 56 - Introduction to Health Information Management - SLO 1 - Define the Health Information Management field and identify career opportunities and advancements.
HIM 58 - Healthcare Law and Ethics - SLO 1 - Identify and describe the parts of the American legal system that are relevant to health information management, including the court and its related legal procedures , the judicial process for health information, and the principles of liability.
HIM 62 - Introduction to Medical Coding - SLO 1 - Examine the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act's (HIPAA) role in determining reimbursement and compliance in the medical office.
HIM 63 - Reimbursement - SLO 1 - Analyze Compliance Alerts and the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act's regulations in relation to proper medical insurance reimbursement techniques.
HIM 64 - Advanced Medical Coding -SLO 1 - Explain and Navigate the structure of ICD-10-PCS and CPT coding systems.
For 2020, the following courses achievement standards are:
HIM 56 - Introduction to Health Information Management - 72 students total, retention rate 92%, success rate 81%
HIM 58 - Healthcare Law/Ethics - 62 students total, retention rate 94%, success rate 81%
HIM 62 - Introduction to Medical Coding - 71 students total, retention rate 88%, success rate 77%
HIM 63 - Reimbursement - Enrollment data not available, retention rate 94%, success rate 87%
HIM 64 - Advanced Medical Coding - Enrollment data not available, retention rate 96%, success rate 85%
HIM 76 - Electronic Health Records - Enrollment data not available, retention rate 94%, success rate 90%
The success rate for HIM classes continues to be high. These courses are consistently taught online, and the career is in an online environment. The recent pandemix has not appreared to have an affect on success rates.
The Strategic Direction Themes are as follows:
Enhancing a Culture of Completion and Goal Attainment
- The HIM department has a series of courses that will be able to allow students to complete an Associate in Science degree in Medical Office Administration, as well as a certificate in Medical Coding.
- Both the certificate and the degree will enable students to enter the workforce immediatley upon completion of either the degree or the certificate of achievement.
Maximizing Resources to Support Student Learning
- The current HIM faculty are all part-time. This maximizes the ability to provide courses that meets the students needs. In the future, the department would like to hire a full-time HIM faculty.
- Because many of the classes at Butte College are currently only offered online, HIM courses are especially appealing to students. The job of Medical Coding is often performed in an employees home, therefore this type of learning is especially beneficial and helpful for students.
Program Review data includes the entire BCIS department, as only in Fall of 2021 did HIM become its own department within Family and Community Services. In the past, the BCIS department worked with the Health Occupations department at Butte to integrate our Heath Information Management courses to compliment the Health Occupations needs. In the future, the HIM department will be included in the FCS Program Review.
- Continue to offer a variety of HIM courses every semester. This will support student participation and ultimate degree or certificate completion. This support Strategic Direction 1 (Enhancing a Culture of Completion and Goal Attainment), and priority # 5 - Meeting student achievement goals.
- Hire a full-time faculty for HIM. This will allow continuity and consistency in course development and implementation, and support Strategic Direction 2 (Supporting Student, Faculty and Staff Success) and Priority # 5 - Meeting student achievement goals
- Continue to integrate HIM into the Family and Community Services Department - HIM has been moved from BCIS recently and feels as if their department doesn't really have a solid foundation. The FCS department will contiunue to work on fostering a positive relationship with the HIM department and their faculty. This supports Strategic Direction 2 (Supporting Student, Faculty and Staff Sucess), and Priority # 7b - Improving Communications.
Strategy 1 - Hire a full-time HIM Instructor
In order for the HIM program to continue to grow, a full-time instructor who has education and experience in the growing HIM field/industry is needed.
The BCIS department created a new program that rolled out in 2017/2018, HIM. Because the program is now completing it's third year of implementation and consistently fills classes, the need to hire a full-time HIM instructor to support our students, teach our classes, and to take this program to the next level of getting it accredited by AHIMA is imperitive.
Strategy 2 - Provide Professional Development
Ensure that the HIM faculty and staff are current in the discipline by attending workshops, trainings, and conferences in person and through online professional development.
It is critical that the HIM faculty be current in their field in order to provide competent instruction to students and to ensure that relevant program and supporting courses are being designed. Opportunities for faculty to participate is content-area professional development is critical.
