Education: The Child Development (CD), ECE, and Family Studies programs focus on the in-depth foundational knowledge, skills, and dispositions that prepare students to gain the workforce competencies needed for various careers within the profession. The programs offer students the opportunity to complete general education requirements and coursework for transfer to a four-year university degree.
The Butte College CDF discipline, which includes CD, ECE, and Elementary Teacher Education, is housed in the Education, Child, and Family Studies (ECFS) Department. It has now become part of the Family and Community Services Department (FCS). ECFS is a thriving program with many and varied options for students to acquire competency in promoting child development and learning; building family and community relationships; implementing program and child assessment systems; and teaching and learning in a diverse society, elementary education, and professional development. The program is complemented by the CDC, which serves as a model laboratory for students in ECE, CD, and other disciplines: Social & Behavioral Sciences, Nursing, Paramedic, Food & Nutrition, Drama, and Elementary Teacher Education. ECFS offers students the opportunity to complete the following coursework: General Education, AS in ECE degree, CD Transfer degree, AS-T in ECE, AA-T Elementary Education, Para-Professional Certificate, ECE Certificate, Certificate of Achievement in ECE, Certificate in Child and Family Studies, or a Social & Behavioral Sciences degree.
In Spring of 2020, EDUC 4, SLO 1 was evaluated. The following were the findings and strategies:
Findings - The SLO conversation concerned combining SLO 1 and 4, rewriting SLO 5 and adding an SLO for career pathways in educartion. The assessment used to form this decision was driven by student feedback and advisory committee direction. The faculty that teach the courses in Education agreed to these changes including revisiting the courses for the para educator certificate.
Strategies - the findings will guide the modification of the EDUC 4 course, the creation of the EDUC 3 course, and offering EDUC 4 as a non-credit option, as well as reduction of the units required for the para-educator certificate.
The EDUC department has undergone a re-evaluation and re-tracking of current student learning outcomes for 2021-2025. All HIM courses and their SLO's have been placed on an Excel Matrix grid. Every course and every SLO will be evaluated by Fall of 2025.
SLO's assessed in Fall of 2021 (and due to be reported out in Spring of 2022) are:
EDUC 2 - SLO 1 Introduction to Education - SLO 1 - Identify personal meanings related to teaching, reflecting on why they want to become a teacher, examining personal characteristics, assumptions and beliefs, subject matter knowledge, experiences and goals which could affect their development as a teacher.
EDUC 4 - SLO 1 - This course has not been taught for several semesters, therefore cannot be evaluated at this time.
EDUC 5 - SLO 1 - This course has not been taught for several semesters, therefore cannot be evaluated at this time.
2020 Student Achievement Standards:
EDUC 2 - Introduction to Education - 122 students total, retention rate 93%, success rate 77%.
The success rate, we believe has been affected by the recent pandemic. With students getting COVID, the changes in online vs FTF education, and the pandemic in general, students are often not completing their courses. We believe the reason for this is that some students are not suited for the online format, and don't drop at the appropriate time to not receive a failing grade in the class.
The Strategic Direction Themes are as follows:
Enhancing a Structure of Completion and Goal Attainment
- The EDUC department, along with FCS, encourages student completion of the AS and AS-T Degrees in Education, Child and Family Studies, along with two certificates of achievement in Education, Child and Family Studies. The degree will assist the student in transfer and the certificates will allow the student to become employed in child care facilities.
Supporting Student, Faculty and Staff Success
- Expanding the schedule to best support students. There are several EDUC courses offered in an online format each semester to support student needs.
The last Program Review for EDUC was completed in 2018-2019. The following are the recommendations that still need to be addressed:
- Create a paraprofessional certificate - the para-education certificate was developed. Unfortunately, the cefttificate has not been completed by students. The EDUC 4 course (Introduction to Para Education) has not occurred due to lack of interest in the course or certificate.
- The recommendation to further the Early Childhood Education Program in Spanish is continuing to occur. There is a PRR currently being planned to be implemented by Fall of 2022.
- Recommendation towards securing funding to maintain CDF staffing and child enrollment, acquisition of NAEYC accreditation and funding to be provided towards an aging CDL facility. Due to the recent COVID issue, child enrollment has been affected due to CDC recommendations. Staffing has been affected as well. Accreditation was granted in Fall of 2021. The hope is to rectify staffing and enrollment issues in the near future.
- Addditional staffing needs to address the two new degrees: Elementary Teachers Education ADT and the Liberal Studies AA degrees. Due to the recent pandemic, staffing issues have not been addressed.
- Additional full-time faculty, a lab tech and an increase in student assistance hours - due to the recent pandemic, an additional faculty has not been hired. There is now a dedicated Admin Secretary for the FCS department.
The Education (2, 4 & 5) Department goals are as follows:
- Continue to address recommendations from the most recent Program Review.
- There is a full-time faculty member retiring in the ECFS department. The primary goal will be to hire a replacement faculty.
- Continue to do outreach to generate student particpationin the EDUC program.
Strategy 1 - Full-time Education/ECFS Faculty
During the past, the department has struggled in locating qualified faculty to teach on behalf of Early Childhood Education/Child Development. In the fall and spring 2021, three of the four f/t instructors had overloads. In the last two years we've hired a total of six new associate faculty. If the department had another F/T faculty member there could be more offerings in both EDUC and Child Development courses.
Hiring a full-time faculty would allow for an increase in course offerings, resulting in completion of aditional certificates and degrees.
Strategy 2 - ECE Spanish Program
Update data and shorten
The Spanish Early Childhood Education (ECE) Program has been serving Hispanic students since January 2008. This program provides the necessary Early Childhood Education (ECE) courses for students to earn a 24 Unit Certificate of Achievement and be hired as teacher assistants, associate teachers, and teachers in public and private child care programs. Students attending this program have a high rate of course completion, high percentage of class attendance, and tend to be hired in Butte, Glenn and adjacent counties. Most recent trends show that some students enrolled in this program change their educational goal from the 24-Unit certificate to pursue a degree in ECE, which has resulted in some students being awarded a two-year degree in ECE.
The Education, Child and Family Studies Department (ECFS), has supported these students providing ECE advising, connecting students with campus resources such as counseling, financial aid, Assessment, and other internal services; The ECFS department has also provided support for students to apply for Child Development Training Consortium (CDTC) funding, and to apply for ECE Teacher Permits through the California Department of Education, which are needed to apply for, and retain jobs.
The continuation for this program, which has been funded by Student Equity, will continue to support college and students to:
1. In light of Butte College’s Hispanic Serving Institution (HIS) status, the validation team recommends that ECFS secure ongoing funding to support the Early Childhood Education in Spanish program in avenues such as the creation of Open Educational materials in Spanish, program coordination, case management functions, and a bilingual web site. We recommend that ECFS continue to partner with campus resources and to advocate for Spanish-speaking staff and incorporate bilingual signage across campus but especially in student support services.
