Student Health Center
Mission Statement
Supporting the Mission, Vision, & Values of Butte College, the Student Health Center (SHC) provides high-quality physical and mental healthcare services for all eligible students in order to encourage wellness and learning.
Program Description
The SHC is located in a rural area. Our philosophy to provide health care services to all of our students, and including students without resources and transportation, makes our center, our successes, and our challenges unique.
The SHC consists of providers who work well together and collaborate effectively with the Campus and community.The SHC is open during the year-round allowing us to see more students.
The SHC, per the Butte College Health Service Plan, operates as a healthcare facility available to students enrolled in credit classes offered by Butte College. Medical and mental health services are available during the fall, winter, spring and summer semesters. The center is open Monday through Friday and is staffed by Physicians, Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants, Clinical Assistants, and Mental Health Specialists.
Medical conditions are assessed, diagnosed and treated by the Nurse Practitioners or the Physician. Problems for which students are commonly seen include but not limited to dermatology, upper respiratory infections, allergies, reproductive health, respiratory problems, depression, anxiety, campus injuries, Tuberculosis testing, preventative care, physical examinations, immunizations, and medication consultation or prescription.
Our Mental Health Specialists are licensed clinical social workers. The therapists provide brief individual and group therapy to registered students. Common issues include depression, anxiety, alcohol and drug issues, relationship problems, grieving, and attention problems. The therapists provide presentations on mental health topics to the campus community. Mental Health services not only aid the health of many of our students, but promotes the safety of the campus.

Standards/Goals for Student Achievement (All Other Departments)
The SHC supports the college in meeting its Vision for Sucess goals by providing healthcare for our students.
Many Butte College students cannot afford to be treated for non-emergent health issues at local walk-in clinics. The SHC treats all students who seek our care. Healthy students are academically productive students. The SHC plays a vital role in supporting Butte College's efforts to support student retention and achievement. The SHC treats a wide array of medical and mental health issues. Other areas of support include:
* Providing care to all students.
* Testing, diagnosing and treating infectious communicable diseases.
* Educating students about maintaining mental health through classroom presentations.
* Collaborating with County and State Public Health agencies.
* Collaborating with Sports Medicine and Athletics to provide physical exams.
* Providing medical standby for major events for Fire/Law Enforcement training and graduation.
* Provide needed support to transferring students to maintain continuity of care.
* Collaborate with community medical and mental health providers for referral and medical/mental health follow-up.
Strategic Direction
The SHC supports student, staff and faculty success by:
- Assisting in the maintenance of physical and mental health;
- Providing collaborative interactions with departments to promote student success;
- Creating a culture whereby students are expected to be partners in planning and recommendations as appropriate and
- Promoting access and equity to services at all sites.
Program Review
The top recommendation from the 2012 Program Review was to:
- Expand professional and administrative staff in order to meet the increasing student need.
- Implement a per-diem model of mid-level practitioners will allow for better coverage and hours for students to be seen.
- Expansion of the Clinical Assistant's hours from 10 months to 12 months (completed).
- Create a Clinical Assistant Lead position.
The SHC has a new Director/Practioner and Mental Health Specialist. The Program Review schedule is pending.
Department Goals
The goals of the SHC include:
- Serve the health and wellness needs of our students;
- Develop a pool of practitioners to cover all hours;
- Reorganize the SHC (hiring another Clinical Assistant and reclassify current Clinical Assistant to Clinical Assistant Lead).
- Improve facilities through the installation of new floors, new paint and/or wall coverings;
